To kick start the ADHD Women Project during October 2021 Awareness Month, Prof. J.J. Sandra Kooij gave a presentation on Women, ADHD and Hormones.
We have included further reading below the Youtube video. Enjoy!
Hormonal mood changes in women with ADHD
The diagnosis of ADHD is often only made in women during menopause. In women with ADHD, mood swings occur 2 to 3 times more often in the week before menstruation, after childbirth and during menopause. This is evident from research by PsyQ ( Dorani, 2021 ). A possible explanation for this is that there is less dopamine available in the brain in people with ADHD, and that in women the drop in estrogen levels during those 3 periods reinforces that shortage. Dopamine and estrogen have similar effects on attention, memory, control over emotions, overview and planning.
H3 Network: Main Heart Hormones
To ensure that women with ADHD and additional hormonal complaints receive the help they need, psychiatrist Prof. Sandra Kooij, cardiologist Dr. Janneke Wittekoek and gynecologist Dr. Dorenda van Dijken join forces in Head-Heart-Hormones ( H3) Network. The aim of the H3 network is to make knowledge more accessible to both healthcare professionals and clients, so that women can be helped faster and better.
